Directions
If you are hauling a trailer or driving a large motorhome GPS may not always take you the best route. Below are our preferred routes.
NOTE: Steer clear of Iron Mountain Rd and Needles Hwy.
From Rapid City:
Route One: Less Curves, More Gravel
Turn onto Highway 79 South.
Follow Highway 79 South about 17 miles (Past Hermosa & the Truck Stop).
Turn right on Highway 36.
Travel 4.5 miles.
Turn right onto Ghost Canyon Road (Gravel).
Follow Ghost Canyon Road 7 miles.
You will see the “Cloud Nine Camping” and road sign “13443” on your left
This route contains 7 miles of wide gravel road with less traffic and fewer sharp curves.
Route Two: More Curves, Less Gravel
From I-90, turn onto US Highway 16.
Follow US Highway 16 to the Keystone exit.
Take Keystone exit.
Once in Keystone, take a left at the first stop light onto Highway 40 East.
Travel 3 miles, then turn right onto Playhouse Road.
Follow Playhouse Road for 3.5 miles.
Turn left onto Ghost Canyon Road.
Travel 1 mile.
You will see the “Cloud Nine Camping” sign on your right.
This route contains some sharp curves.
From Custer:
Route One: Less Curves, More Gravel
Take Highway 16A East out of Custer.
Highway 16A will become Highway 36.
Take a left onto Ghost Canyon Road.
Follow Ghost Canyon Rd for 7 miles.
You will see the “Cloud Nine Camping” sign on your left.
This route contains 7 miles of wide gravel road with less traffic and fewer sharp curves.
Route Two: More Curves, Less Gravel
Take US Highway 16 North out of Custer.
Follow US Highway 16 to the Keystone exit.
Take Keystone exit.
Once in Keystone, take a left at the first stop light onto Highway 40 East.
Travel 3 miles, then turn right onto Playhouse Road.
Follow Playhouse Road for 3.5 miles.
Turn left onto Ghost Canyon Road.

Turn onto Highway 79 North.
Follow Highway 79 North to Hermosa
